SOC 2 readiness for a startup app: what it adds to a software quote

What SOC 2 actually examines, published audit prices, the observation period, and which parts of SOC 2 readiness belong in your development quote — and which do not.

The short answer

SOC 2 examines your company's controls, not just your app — so only part of readiness belongs in a development quote. Audit fees usually run $10,000–$50,000; a first SOC 2 costs $10,000–$80,000 or more all-in (Vanta). Type 2 covers three to twelve months. The build should add controls built in and evidence produced as it goes.

SOC 2 is about the company, not only the app

The AICPA describes SOC 2 as reporting on “an examination of controls at a service organization relevant to security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, or privacy” (AICPA & CIMA). The service organisation is your company. That is why only part of SOC 2 readiness belongs in a development quote.

If a quote puts “SOC 2 compliance” in a single line, ask which side of this table it covers.

What to ask before you accept a quote that mentions SOC 2

  1. Which controls does the build put in place — and which does it leave to you?
  2. What evidence will you receive for your auditor?
  3. Will a later change that breaks a control be caught before it ships?
  4. Is the vendor claiming to make you compliant? Nobody’s vendor can; only your audit can report on your controls.
  5. Does the vendor hold its own SOC 2 report — and if not, what does it hold instead?

How Pricient quotes SOC 2 work

You do not have to know which framework applies — the project tells us, and the quote carries it. When a project involves payments or money movement, SOC 2 and PCI are spotted, not left to you. QA and security are visible lines in every tier, and the evidence a security reviewer and an auditor ask for — a control-mapping binder, data-flow diagrams and drift checks that fail the build if a later change breaks a control — is produced as the work is done.

Audit-ready by default, never self-certified. We do not make you compliant; we make your auditor’s job faster. IOanyT, which builds what Pricient quotes, holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and ISO 9001:2015 certification.

Questions

Asked about this

How much does a SOC 2 audit cost?

Vanta puts a SOC 2 audit fee at usually $10,000–$50,000, and the all-in cost of a first SOC 2 at $10,000–$80,000 or more. Drata lists Type 1 at $7,500–$60,000 and Type 2 at $12,000–$100,000+ (checked 5 October 2026).

What is the difference between SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2?

Type 1 evaluates the design of your security controls at a single point in time. Type 2 assesses both their design and how well they operated over a period — typically three to twelve months, with six months often recommended for a first audit (Drata, March 2026).

Can a development firm make my app SOC 2 compliant?

No. SOC 2 is an examination of your organisation's controls by an independent auditor, and much of it — access reviews, onboarding, vendor management, incident response — is about how your company operates. A development firm can build the app so its part of the controls is in place, and produce the evidence your auditor will ask for.

When should a startup start on SOC 2?

Usually when customers start asking for it in security questionnaires or contracts. Because a Type 2 report covers months of operation, building the app's controls in from the start avoids reopening finished work later.
